Lawyers Invest in Alabama Communities
In May, ACJF announced nearly a quarter of a million dollars in grants to nonprofit groups throughout the state.
"Despite the slow economy and that impact on interest rates, I am proud that we were able to continue our commitment to help those who toil daily to help others," Sue McInnish, ACJF Executive Director, said.
ACJF received 160 grant applications in its annual competitive process of which 72 were approved. Grant awards ranged from $1,000 to $25,000. The grants will help organizations that assist children, families and seniors as well as those that offer civil legal aid to the poor. Click here for a list of the 2009 ACJF Grantees.
“It was an exceptionally competitive process because we received high quality grant applications for many worthwhile projects. This year’s grants process has been very fulfilling because we have been able to make some significant awards to organizations that have put together very innovative programs and services. We are excited that we have been able offer assistance in these tough economic times,” McInnish added.
Founded in 1993 by the Alabama Association for Justice, ACJF awards grants through the Interest on Lawyers Trust Account (IOLTA) program. Funds from the IOLTA program as well as from donations have allowed the Foundation to award more than $7 million to nonprofit organizations statewide during its nearly 17-year history.
