Birmingham, AL—The Alabama Civil Justice Foundation is pleased to announce its grant awards to Birmingham area nonprofit organizations whose programs and services assist communities, children, families and seniors.
In December, the ACJF Board of Directors approved grants to organizations statewide, of which Birmingham area nonprofit organizations received $136,500 in competitive, Justice and capacity building grants. These newest grants bring the total amount of grant awards for 2010 grant year to nearly $500,000 which includes grants that were awarded throughout the year.
"It is especially rewarding to offer funding that supports the outstanding work that is being done to help others. We recognize that the downturn in the nation’s economy has meant decreased resources for nonprofits while the need for their services has increased. We are pleased that our grants can offer some support during these difficult times,” Rebekah McKinney, ACJF President, said.
The Birmingham area grantees are the Alabama Association of Nonprofits, the Alabama Center for Law & Civic Education, the Alabama Gospel Music Cultural Arts Center, the Alabama Poverty Project, the Alabama Women’s Resource Network, the Bessemer Cut-Off Advocacy Center, Birmingham AIDS Outreach, Cahaba Valley Health Care, CASA of Jefferson County, Children’s Dance Foundation, Creative Wellness Institute, Family Connection, Hand-in-Paw, Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama, Kid One Transport, Main Street Birmingham, PreSchool Partners, SafeHouse of Shelby County, Southeastern Diabetes Education Services, Space One Eleven, Special Equestrians, Spirit of Hope Youth Ranch and Workshops, Inc.
Justice grants were awarded to Birmingham AIDS Outreach ($15,000) and the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama ($30,000) earlier in the 2010 grant cycle.
Founded in 1992, funds from the ACJF Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTA) program and donations have allowed the Foundation to award nearly $9 million to nonprofit organizations statewide and nearly $1.2 million to groups in the Birmingham area which includes Jefferson and Shelby counties.
ACJF’s grants are possible because of the generosity of Alabama lawyers who work diligently for justice in the courtroom and their communities. ACJF is proud to represent attorneys who support its efforts to demonstrate a genuine concern for the disadvantaged in our state and to assist in turning this concern into genuine help for those who need it the most.
“Our grants truly have a statewide impact. We not only fund programs and services in local communities, but we also fund projects that have a statewide capacity. Many of these organizations look to us for vitally important funding which is why it is gratifying to know that we are able to fund large and small projects and touch so many lives in the process,” Sue McInnish, ACJF Executive Director, said.
